What is Digital marketing?

If you’re a business owner and you’re wondering what all this “digital marketing” stuff is that you’ve heard about, allow me to shed some light on the subject.

For the last few years, I’ve been working as a digital marketing professional, which basically means that I get paid to ‘do stuff on the internet’ for businesses.

Digital Marketing Definition

Most people tend to think that this means that I design and sell websites, and while some digital marketers may include that in their bucket list of services they offer, I prefer to define digital marketing as the promotion of your business using the internet.

That’s where the word “digital” comes from. So, digital marketing is pretty much interchangeable with the terms “online marketing” or “internet marketing”.

Put yet another way, digital marketing involves promoting your business using the internet.

Digital marketing includes things like social media, mobile marketing, search engine optimization, pay per click, video marketing, website conversions, web analytics tracking and more.

As you can see, there are a lot of different elements to digital marketing.

Just as doctors specialize in a particular discipline and become neuro surgeons or heart surgeons, most marketers specialize in a few areas and then have a broad knowledge of the other elements that they don’t actually do themselves.

Some specialize in video or SEO. Others specialize in Pay Per Click or Email Marketing while others may only focus on Facebook.

The Benefits of Digital Marketing for Business Owners

Marketing on the internet is advantageous to small businesses, because it is far cheaper than traditional marketing channels like radio, television and advertising in magazine and newspapers.

Online marketing also has a significant advantage of sophisticated tracking that can be used to see not only how many people viewed your advertisement or website, but also how many clicked on an ad or a link before going on to make a purchase.

When done right (right being the operative word) – digital marketing is not only more affordable than most traditional marketing channels – it’s also more accountable.
